Focus: Engage with Diverse Perspectives

Description: The inspiration for this paper was the movie Flowers for Algernon, which shows the story of a mentally disabled man, Charlie Gordon, and his desire for knowledge, in which he believes that if he becomes a genius, society will accept him. The prompt for the paper was to take an idea presented in a movie we watched in class and write an essay arguing for or against the idea chosen. My paper focused on the question: is knowledge truly the key to happiness, and how the movie inadvertently shows that it is not.

Reflection: All of my life, I have been convinced that knowledge is what leads to happiness, success, and money. The human community around me says this is what I should desire in life; however, after writing this paper, I realized that too much knowledge can hurt relationships and our ability to connect with others on a personal level. If all we care about is our own knowledge, then how can we care about other’s emotions and others as human beings.

Proficiencies: engagement with diverse perspectives, cultural revelation, critical thinking
