{"id":203,"date":"2016-11-12T18:53:05","date_gmt":"2016-11-12T12:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.bridgewater.edu\/?page_id=203"},"modified":"2016-11-12T18:53:05","modified_gmt":"2016-11-12T12:53:05","slug":"poem-three-jewels","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.bridgewater.edu\/mtembo\/culture-of-zambia\/poem-three-jewels\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem:  Three Jewels"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\">The Three Jewels<\/h3>\n<p>Jewel numero uno was born<br \/>\nTwo days after Christmas festivities<br \/>\nEarly drizzling rainy morning<br \/>\nAnxious expectant first father to be<br \/>\nVisits maternity ward<br \/>\nSteaming tea and egg sandwich in hand<br \/>\nIs it a boy or a girl?<\/p>\n<p>The tiny creature is alive<br \/>\nIts tiny chest rising up and down<br \/>\nRapid succession precious motions of life<br \/>\nTiny hands clasped together under its cheek<br \/>\nWhat a peaceful blissful repose?<br \/>\nEyes closed in silent sleep<\/p>\n<p>The jewel almost killed his mother<br \/>\nLife\u2019s inevitable risk<br \/>\nExhausted mother in pain<br \/>\nWhy does life have to begin with such pain?<br \/>\nHardly had a wink of sleep<br \/>\nDeeps rips and tears in the canal<br \/>\nWhy does life end in pain and grief?<\/p>\n<h3>Second Jewel<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.bridgewater.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/11\/Zambia9.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The second jewel was born<br \/>\nWeeks after Christmas festivities<br \/>\nOn Superbowl Sunday<br \/>\nTwo feet of drifting snow<br \/>\nBitter cold of seventy degrees<br \/>\nBelow zero Michigan winter<\/p>\n<p>Father abandons Joe Montana<br \/>\nLabor pains too intense<br \/>\nAbandon spectacular show<br \/>\nLamaze classes amaze father<br \/>\nMonitor mother\u2019s breathing<\/p>\n<p>Second jewel born after<br \/>\nChorus of commands to push<br \/>\nTen pounds the nurse says<br \/>\nReady to dunk the basketball<br \/>\nThree hundred and sixty degrees<br \/>\nOn a bitter cold Michigan winter<\/p>\n<p>Mother and father doing well<br \/>\nFirst jewels giggle nervously<br \/>\nLittle brother finally here<br \/>\nWho is not quite so little<br \/>\nHead alone too big for lap<br \/>\nOn a bitter cold Michigan winter<\/p>\n<h3>Third Jewel<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.bridgewater.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/11\/Zambia4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Third jewel is born<br \/>\nNineteen days into the cold<br \/>\nMonth of June of Savannah<br \/>\nIn a desolate shanty compound<br \/>\nClinic in Lusaka Africa<br \/>\nBuilt by the Irish<br \/>\nIn the shanty compound<br \/>\nNamed Kalingalinga<\/p>\n<p>Men not allowed<br \/>\nWomen in many states of undress<br \/>\nStressful moans of labor pains<br \/>\nIn the crowded maternity clinic<br \/>\nFather visits very hastily<br \/>\nIs it a boy or a girl?<\/p>\n<p>I am outnumbered<br \/>\nMother feigns complaint<br \/>\nWith a twisted smile<br \/>\nOn exhausted face<br \/>\nIt is a boy<br \/>\nThere goes a chance<br \/>\nFor a delicate girl<br \/>\nBeautiful pretty dress<br \/>\nOn Spring Easter Sunday<\/p>\n<p>The tiny creature is alive<br \/>\nBreathing in rapid succession<br \/>\nUnder the small baby blanket<br \/>\nFather squeezes wife\u2019s hand<br \/>\nKisses her on forehead<br \/>\nHis eyes glisten all so slightly<br \/>\nLooks away dilapidated shanty<br \/>\nMurmuring congratulations<br \/>\nWill take you home in two hours<br \/>\nNow we have three jewels<br \/>\nby Mwizenge S. Tembo<\/p>\n<h3>The Sound of the Shower<\/h3>\n<p>The swishing sound<br \/>\nOf the shower<br \/>\nEarly in the morning<br \/>\nOf yet another bright day<br \/>\nOf yet another troubled day<br \/>\nOf another anxious day<br \/>\nThe swishing sound<br \/>\nOf the shower<br \/>\nMarks the end of the night\u2019s<br \/>\nUnion of sharing<br \/>\nSnores and more<br \/>\nThe same bed and the same covers<br \/>\nNo more tender touches<br \/>\nNo more tender kisses<br \/>\nWhispers of I love you<br \/>\nTill night we meet again<\/p>\n<p>The swishing sound<br \/>\nOf the shower<br \/>\nBrings relief to<br \/>\nEstranged partners of<br \/>\nA zillion nights of sharing<br \/>\nSame bed and same covers<br \/>\nSame dreams and same expectations<br \/>\nTill night we wish<br \/>\nWe could not meet again<\/p>\n<p>The abrupt sound<br \/>\nOf the shower<br \/>\nSharp and painful reminder<br \/>\nThat even passionate secret lovers<br \/>\nLocked in blissful ecstasy<br \/>\nDo momentarily part<br \/>\nOnly if for one day<br \/>\nA peck on the cheek<br \/>\nA squeeze of the cheek<br \/>\nA passionate French kiss<br \/>\nTil night do us part<br \/>\nTil next time do us part<\/p>\n<p>The swishing sound<br \/>\nOf the shower<br \/>\nBrings to a sudden halt<br \/>\nEarly morning yearnings<br \/>\nOf lovers\u2019 send off for the day<br \/>\nFingers of a centipede<br \/>\nExplore smooth crevices<br \/>\nThose kisses and tender groping<br \/>\nI have to hop in the shower<br \/>\nI will be late for work<br \/>\nTil night do us part<\/p>\n<p>The swishing sound<br \/>\nOf the shower<br \/>\nWashes the sweat away<br \/>\nThe sweet smell of womanhood<br \/>\nThe sweet smell of manhood<br \/>\nThrowing the baby away<br \/>\nWith the bath water<br \/>\nThe pungent smell of cologne<br \/>\nThe piercing whiff of<br \/>\nChannel Number Five<br \/>\nTil night do us part<\/p>\n<p>by Mwizenge S.
