My Mom’s Relationship with Reading
My mom didn’t like to read when she was growing up. She doesn’t remember just having children’s books available to her. The only things she remembers reading in school are two books, a history book about Jamestown in the third grade and the Scarlet Letter in high school. There is another book, that haunts her from high school, that she cannot remember the name of but it was required reading and it involved a young mother and her baby hiding in a mountain cave and the baby dying from a scorpion sting. Maybe that’s why it took her into her adulthood to finally realize that reading was for pleasure and not a requirement. Our past does influence us more than we realize sometimes.
