Core Memory
When I was younger, my Mom went to one of those toy parties that are held at people’s houses. She took me along, which was probably not a great idea. They had all kinds of primary colored toys that you could stack, balls that rolled down slides, shakers that made noise and you could watch the colorful objects inside swirl around. One thing my mom bought was a book: Cock-A-Doodle-Doo! Barnyard Hullabaloo. The book was big and colorful and it was about all the barnyard animals. There was a comical rhyming paragraph that described each animal and I can remember my mom reading it to me. Sometimes she would get tongue-tied reciting the silly rhymes but that just made the book that much more fun. My mom loved that book so much that she bought Commotion in the Ocean too. I have those books in my hope chest to pull out someday to read with my children.
