Blog 11: Mindo, Montañita, and the Galapagos (aka, traveling like a beast!)

This is very long overdue. Since my last post almost three weeks ago, I have seen some unforgettable nature and done some extreme things with my time. I will begin with Mindo, since it is freshest in my mind. It is only about 2 hours from Quito, so the bus trip was short and sweet on Friday. We got there just in time to book all of our activities for the weekend and go to a frog concert. Now, this may sound weird, but, for $4.50 we got a cup of...

Blog 10: Traveling & Some Intensely Unforgettable Things

So you may not have heard, but Ecuador is experiencing its fourth day of forest fires. They have ripped across the mountainside, causing even more black smoke in the air than usual. Helicopters can be seen of miles carrying buckets of water to the worst sites. It is very sad to sit on the fun and look to my right, only to see charred and marred earth, instead of the gorgeous tree-filled mountain. Something else here that I can’t get used...

Blog 9: Giving a bit back!

I can just see now how it will be when I am a teacher….SPECTACULAR! Today I began my volunteer work in a school for students who live in an impoverished neighborhood and who have issues in the household. Their ages range from 5 to 14, so it is a tremendous effort to keep them all content at once, and by that I mean all 80 of them…Today I worked mostly with the younger crew. I helped with homework and just maintaining the chaos in general. My...

Blog 8: We Have to Take Classes?

Hola a todos! So you would have thunk that going away to study abroad would actually include classes? Ew. Classes started last Wednesday, and I have to say, I don’t think I can ever get used to “real” college classes again. Here, I have 4 classes that I am expected to attend during the course of the week. I am taking a painting class (which only happens once a week, but for 3 hours), a gen. ed. psych class (now, this one I am...

Blog 7: Settling in & ……. NEW CLOTHES!

So, it’s been a while, but SO much has happened, least of all the wonderful weekend with my U.S. Mom! As you may know, my mom works for Delta and can get a pretty sweet deal on plane tickets. So, she made a trip out of a weekend and came down to see me…and to bring me a new wardrobe. Her and I (now looking pretty stylish) took advantage of the long weekend (August 10th is Independence Day for Ecuador) and went back to Otavalo. We bought...

Blog 6: Viajando y mi vida en Ecuador

Hola a todos! So I have officially been living in Ecuador for about two weeks. This is two weeks with my host family and crazy delicious foods, and of course LOTS of traveling to keep me busy. So in the last two weeks I have traveled throughout North Quito with my group of BCA friends. We visited the Virgin de Panecillo which has a remarkable history. When it was built, there were many other statues of the Virgin built, as well. This one,...

Blog 5: El Grupo BCA…

So, here I am in Quito with nothing but the clothes on my back, and who do I meet, but 20 of the nicest and most accommodating people I could imagine. My whole BCA group has become a large interconnected family over the past four odd days. Corny name games and terribly gross descriptions of buckets of poop falling on our heads have brought us together and piqued our excitement for this entire experience. Yes, there may be the overwhelming odds...

Blog 4: Terrible Day

Today was rough. I traveled back to Ecuador from Colombia today, and some things went wrong. Firstly, about an hour into the trip, the bus broke down. Thus, we all had to switch out to a new bus. I grabbed my suitcases from underneath the first bus, and put them under the second, then I settled in for a 6 hour trip. I didn’t really have time to get lunch, and by the time I got to the bus station in Quito, it was dinnertime. I got out of...

Blog 3: Viajando por Colombia

So Friday we had a celebration for my friend’s birthday. We set up the whole thing in his favorite bar and had all sorts of decorations representing his favorite band: KISS. The whole thing was a riot and we sang along to rock songs for hours. We even had cupcakes with those sugar pieces shaped into the rock sign and images of the band members’ faces. We all had a blast. It was also awesome because I got to meet a bunch of his...

Deportes Reales

Well, so I thought that Americans got excited about football…I was sorely mistaken…Latinos get EXCITED about Futbol! Last night was the National Championship for Colombia, featuring Santa Fe versus Medellin. Luis and Monica (mis amigos) were of course sporting the green and white jerseys their hometown, Medellin. Luckily, this team won the match with 2-0. But man, they do not mess around with their Futbol. Throughout the entire game, I could...
